storehouse foodbank

Storehouse Foodbank began in September 2007. It’s a central part of who we are as a local church, believing we’re here to serve our community.

We provide emergency food for families and individuals in crisis and work through a referral system with a growing number of agencies in Sudbury and the surrounding areas. They hold our Food Request Slips, which they give to their clients so that they can visit one of our Drop-ins and pick up an emergency bag.

Where Can I Get a Request Slip From?

Currently, we are working with the following organisations, but the list is growing all the time.

CAB                     Open Invitation         Mental Health Services
Befrienders          Turning Point            Your Local Church
Job Centre           Social Services         Children’s Centres
Solo Housing       Genesis Housing      Orwell Housing
Catch 22              GPs

We ask that you pick up a Food Request Slip from an organisation you are already in contact with so that they can refer you to us. You will then able to pick up an emergency bag on a Tuesday or Friday afternoon between 1-3pm.

Where Does the Food Come From?

We have now established a number of donations stations in and around Sudbury – Waitrose, East of England Co-ops: Long Melford, Lavenham & Great Cornard. Anyone can drop food off at these points. It is then collected by a member of our Storehouse Team, counted, dated and put into bags ready for collection.

A number of our partner churches and organisations also have Collection Points where they gather food from their members and colleagues and then drop them at one of our Donation Stations. If you would like to set up a Collection Point, please email the Storehouse team. We could do so much more with your support.

What Food Do We Need?

We currently collect dry-store foods only, as we do not have refrigeration facilities. For an up to date list of what we need, see our shopping list above.

Who Makes Storehouse Happen Each Week?

Storehouse is run primarily by volunteers. At present we have 20, plus two part-time salaried staff. The volunteers have key roles such as Drop-in Team Leader and helpers, Drop-in Welcome Team, Drop-in Assessors, Stock Room Team Leader and helpers. On staff, we have our Team Leader and our Community Liaison (responsible for strengthening our referral agency links and building Business Partners).

You do not need to be part of Stour Valley Vineyard to volunteer, just sympathetic to our cause and values. If you’d like to know more about volunteering, email us.

How is Storehouse Funded?

Up until recently, Stour Valley Vineyard has fully funded Storehouse. However, we are now finding that, as the usage is increasing, so are the costs. When we began, we fed around 80 people in our first year. In 2017 we fed over 1800, which was an increase of 79% from 2016. Inevitably, as the operation grows, so does our need for larger premises and staff.

It costs in the region of £16,500 each year to keep Storehouse running. If you would like to help with these costs with a gift today, you’d become our best friend! Even a gift of £25 would go a long way. Thank you.
